THE SETUP

Start with the essentials.

Follow these five steps at your own pace. Your wallet setup happens only in the official extension—not on this guide.

STEP 01

Get the official extension

Visit Coinbase’s official wallet download page and follow the link for your browser. Check the publisher before installing.

Good to know

Avoid sponsored search results, direct messages, and lookalike domains. Use the official Coinbase site as your starting point.

01
STEP 02

Create or import a wallet

Open the extension and choose whether to create a new self-custody wallet or import one you already control.

Good to know

A Coinbase Wallet is self-custody and separate from a Coinbase.com exchange account. Follow the official in-extension instructions.

02
STEP 03

Back up your recovery phrase

Store your recovery phrase offline in a secure place. It is the key to your wallet and cannot be reset by support.

Good to know

Never type your recovery phrase into a website, chat, email, or support form. Coinbase will never ask you to share it.

03
STEP 04

Pin the extension

Use your browser’s extensions menu to pin the verified Coinbase Wallet extension for quick access.

Good to know

Only use the extension you installed from the official route. Remove anything you do not recognize.

04
STEP 05

Connect carefully

When visiting a dapp, check the URL and review every permission request before approving it.

Good to know

Connecting a wallet does not mean a site is safe. Read transaction details and reject requests you do not understand.

05
KEEP YOURSELF SAFE

Pause. Check.
Then connect.

Scams often copy familiar brands and create urgency. A few careful checks can help you avoid handing over access to your wallet.

Verify the address

Check the full website URL before connecting or signing anything.

Review permissions

Understand what a dapp is asking you to approve. When unsure, reject.

Keep secrets offline

No legitimate helper needs your password, private key, or recovery phrase.

Take your time

Urgent requests, giveaways, and unsolicited support are common red flags.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you get going.

Quick answers for a safer start. For current instructions, always check official Coinbase support.

Coinbase Wallet help center
Is Coinbase Wallet the same as my Coinbase account?

No. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet where you control access with your recovery phrase. Your Coinbase.com account is a separate service. Never assume a password reset for one restores the other.

What should I do if a website asks for my recovery phrase?

Do not enter it. Close the page and verify you are using the official site. Anyone with your recovery phrase can take control of the wallet, and legitimate support should never request it.

Can I use Coinbase Wallet in any browser?

Browser support and availability can change. Check Coinbase’s official downloads page for the current supported browsers and installation instructions.

Is this an official Coinbase page?

No. This is an independent educational getting-started guide and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Coinbase. Use Coinbase’s official website for downloads and current product support.
